Home painting: how to prepare the right conditions for painting at home
Do you want to paint at home? We will advise you how to prepare a simple space with ideal conditions for spraying.
When the garage is not enough
Spray painting is an affordable, fast and, if done correctly, high-quality solution for the treatment of metal, plastic, wood and other materials. But the result doesn't just depend on the quality of the spray. The key is the preparation of the area where the painting takes place. Even a do-it-yourselfer can create a paint shop that ensures a clean surface, fast drying and minimal waste.
1. Choose the right place
An enclosed, ventilated room such as a garage, basement or workshop is best. It should not be too dusty and should allow for temperature and humidity control.
Ideal conditions:
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C
- Humidity: below 70 %
- No direct sunlight or draughts
Unsuitable locations: outdoor space, balcony, poorly ventilated cellar.
2. Provide ventilation and protection
Spray paints contain solvents, so you need to:
- Good ventilation: open windows, fan or hood with an outlet to the outside
- Respiratory protection: respirator with carbon filter
- Environmental cover: foil curtains, cardboard screens, painter's tarpaulin
We recommend creating a simple spray booth out of PVC sheeting that you hang around the work area. This will reduce dust and particle dispersion.
3. Prepare the surface thoroughly
It is crucial to prepare the surface properly before painting:
- Cleaning: remove old paint, grease, dust
- Sanding: lightly roughen the surface with sandpaper (400-800 grit)
- Degreasing: using a technical spray from the COLORIT range
For more complex surfaces use:
- Spray Putty from Rustbreaker for filling small irregularities
- Plastic Primer for plastics and bumpers
- Brunox Epoxy if there is rust on the surface
4. Equipment and tools
Basic equipment for a home paint shop:
| Aids | Description | COLORIT Recommendations |
|---|---|---|
| Respirator | Protects against fumes | Professional mask with replaceable filter |
| Pad | Floor protection | Cardboard, fabric mat or painting film |
| Parts holder | Painting rotation | Can be made from old hangers or wire |
| Degreaser | Clean surface | Cosmos Lac technical spray |
| Grinder | Substrate preparation | Fine sandpaper, sanding sponges |
| Light | Coverage check | White LED spotlight or flashlight |
5. Choosing the right sprays
COLORIT offers a wide range of sprays that are also suitable for home use. Depending on the type of surface we recommend:
- Cosmos Lac Premium RAL - 100% acrylic paints with high opacity and fast drying
- MACOTA COLOR 3G - universal range with high pigment content, ideal for larger areas
- Rustbreaker Primer Top Coat - a combination of primer and top coat for metal surfaces
- Cosmos Lac Water-Based Clearcoat - eco-friendly protection with a matt or gloss effect
6. Practical tips
🛠️ Don't start painting right away. After degreasing, let the surface air out for a few minutes.
🛠️ Make the coats thin and even. Take your time. Wait 10-15 minutes between coats.
🛠️ Paint in the direction of the light. You can see the areas you have already covered better.
🛠️ Keep a test piece handy. An old sheet or plate will help fine tune your spraying technique.
You can do it at home, too
Setting up a home paint shop doesn't require thousands of dollars or professional facilities. All you need is a little space, the right environment and quality products. Thanks to the COLORIT range, you can do painting at home without compromise.
All recommended sprays, cleaners and accessories can be found in the e-shop, where the entire range is clearly categorised by application and surface type.
