How a rust converter works and why it is better than a conventional rust remover

Getting rid of rust doesn’t mean grinding into bare metal. There’s a smarter way, a rust converter.

Rust is the nightmare of every handyman and professional. Once it appears, it tends to spread, degrading the surface and distorting the structure of the material. Traditional rust removers can erode or dissolve rust, but usually require subsequent sanding, rinsing or other chemical steps. The modern solution comes in the form of a so-called rust converter, which works in a completely different way - instead of dissolving the rust, it converts it while creating a protective layer.

Brunox Epoxy: rust converter and primer in one

Brunox Epoxy, which is distributed exclusively by COLORIT in the Czech Republic, is one of the most effective products on the market. It is not only a rust converter, but also an epoxy primer that allows further layering without the need to grind into clean metal.

It works on the principle of chemical reaction with iron oxide, i.e. rust itself. On contact with the corroded surface, it penetrates deeply and converts the rust into a stable black layer that does not react further with oxygen or moisture. At the same time, it forms an epoxy base layer that is ideal for further coatings.

The great advantage of Brunox is that it does not contain acids, phosphates or heavy metals, making it a gentle yet very effective product. In addition, application is simple - no need for rinsing or complicated neutralization.

Cutter vs. converter: key differences

A conventional rust remover is usually an acidic product that erodes and dissolves rust. While this removes the top layer of oxidation, it often leaves an unstable, absorbent surface that must be mechanically cleaned further. This is usually followed by sanding, rinsing with water and drying, which means additional time and risk of corrosion re-occurring between steps.

A converter such as Brunox Epoxy solves the problem differently. It not only stops the rust, but also converts and prepares the surface for the next coat without the need to mechanically dispose of the entire layer. Simply remove loose rust particles (e.g. with a wire brush), leave the rest, apply the converter and allow to dry.

While the stripper is a "reactive chemistry" that cancels the rust, the converter is a "smart chemistry" that reshapes and seals it.

How to properly apply Brunox Epoxy

Application is easy and manageable even in home conditions:

  1. Clean the surface of loose rust, dust and grease. There is no need to grind into the metal.
  2. Shake the spray thoroughly or prepare the liquid for brushing.
  3. Apply in 1 to 2 coats. If the surface is more porous, a second coat will help stabilize.
  4. Allow to dry for 12 to 24 hours depending on ambient temperature.
  5. Once dry, a hard, matte black surface will be formed and serves as a primer.

Common topcoats, sealers or fillers can be safely applied to this surface.

Brunox Epoxy 1K-Filler

For best results, COLORIT recommends combining Brunox Epoxy with Rustbreaker 1K-Filler. This is a quick-drying spray base filler that helps:

  • Smooth out minor unevenness
  • Ensure better adhesion of the topcoat
  • Increase the opacity and smoothness of the final coat

Once the converter is applied and dry, simply apply 2 coats of 1K-Filler, sand lightly and then apply a topcoat (such as Rustbreaker or Cosmos Lac sprays).

Brunox Epoxy is not just a replacement for a stripper, it is an effective system for long term protection of metal surfaces. Instead of aggressive chemistry, it offers a smart solution that saves time, material and nerves. Combined with other products from the COLORIT range, such as 1K-Filler or high-quality top sprays, you can stop corrosion and prepare the surface for a professional paint job with minimal effort.
