How to choose the right spray for different materials
There is no colour like colour. The choice of spray depends on the material. This overview will save you time and mistakes.
You may want to use spray paint on the metal pot and the plastic bumper. But definitely not the same. Each material has its own properties - absorbency, flexibility, temperature resistance or adhesion - and the choice of paint should be adapted to this. COLORIT offers a wide range of spray solutions for different purposes and surfaces. In this article, we'll give you advice on how to get to know them and make the right choice.
How do sprays differ?
Composition and base:
- Acrylic sprays: fast-drying, durable, universal use
- Synthetic paints: slower drying but excellent adhesion
- Waterborne paints: low odour, environmentally friendly, ideal for interior use
- Effect sprays: imitation of texture, metal or patina
- Refractory sprays: for temperatures up to 700 °C
Important factors:
- Surface is absorbent, glossy, flexible or smooth
- Material is metal, plastic, wood, stone, ceramic or glass
- Whether the use of a primer (base coat) is required
Recommended spray types by material
| Material | Recommended spray | Brand | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal (sheet metal, iron) | Premium RAL acrylic, Rustbreaker Top Coat, Metal Primer | Cosmos Lac, Rustbreaker | Degrease, use primer on bare metal |
| Plastic (ABS, PP, bumpers) | Plastic Primer Top Coat | Rustbreaker | Does not hold without primer. Choose flexible colours |
| Wood (painted and raw) | Lacquer Varnish, Chalk Effect, Cosmos Lac Varnish | Cosmos Lac | Wood must be sanded, dry |
| Stone, ceramic | Water-Based Spray Varnish, acrylic paints | Cosmos Lac | Matte or chalk effects are ideal |
| Glass | Water-Based Varnish, Chalk Effect | Cosmos Lac | Lightweight coating, multiple thin coats |
| Wheels, rims | Diamond Wheel Spray, Rustbreaker Wheel Silver | Cosmos Lac, Rustbreaker | Abrasion and UV resistant, no varnish required |
| Exhaust, heater | High Heat Spray (up to 650-700 °C) | Rustbreaker, Cosmos Lac, MACOTA | Apply on degreased surface, without primer |
| Interior decoration | Chalk Effect, Marble Effect | Cosmos Lac | For creative applications, effect coatings |
| Weapons, metal parts | Brunox Epoxy Top Coat | Brunox, Rustbreaker | Epoxy protects against rust, no need to grind into metal |
Practical scenarios and recommendations
Painting metal shelving in the garage
Use Brunox Epoxy as a rust converter and primer. Then apply Cosmos Lac Premium RAL - the shade of your choice. For greater durability, we recommend repainting with a waterborne varnish.
Reviving an old chair or stool
After sanding, apply Chalk Effect spray for a vintage look. For fixing, use Cosmos Lac transparent lacquer - matt or glossy.
Painting a plastic box
Apply Plastic Primer Rustbreaker to the plastic, then choose Cosmos Lac Easy Max or Rustbreaker Top Coat universal acrylic spray. The spray adheres well even to flexible parts.
Repairing the paint on the bike
Use Rustbreaker Wheel Silver or Cosmos Lac Diamond Wheel Spray. Resistant to pebbles, UV and abrasion. Apply 2-3 thin coats.
Do not underestimate the preparation
Choosing the right spray is just the first step. Successful painting also depends on:
- Thorough surface preparation: cleaning, sanding, degreasing
- Suitable conditions: temperature 18-25 °C, minimum humidity
- Correct application: thin coats, breaks between coats, ventilation
