How to refurbish your scooter, bike or motorbike

Even an old machine can look like new. All it takes is the right paint, a little preparation and a process that works.

A motorbike, bicycle or scooter is not just a means of transport. They are personal machines that often carry our style, memories or emotions. But after years of use, their appearance wears out - paint fades, metal parts corrode, plastics dull. Renovation with COLORIT spray paints is fast, affordable and produces results comparable to professional painting, provided you follow the correct procedure.

Where to start? Preparation is the key

Before you start spraying, you must have a perfectly prepared surface. Varnish will not adhere to dirt, grease or corrosion. The procedure is the same for the bike frame, motorcycle tank, scooter covers and smaller parts:

  1. Clean the surface of dust and grease. Use a technical degreaser (e.g. Cosmos Lac Cleaner).
  2. Remove old paintwork or disturbed layers. Use sandpaper, sponge or fine emery.
  3. In case of corrosion, use Brunox Epoxy. It will treat the area and create a solid base.
  4. Degrease again before spraying. Apply the product directly before applying the primer.

Recommended combinations according to surface type

COLORIT offers a wide range of products that can be combined according to the type of material. Here are the most common scenarios:

1. Metal frame parts, tank, fenders

2. Plastic parts (covers, fairings)

  • Primer: Plastic Primer (ensures adhesion on plastics)
  • Colour: Macota Special Effects for fancy paint finishes, or classic acrylic sprays
  • Varnish: Macota Transparent for UV protection and final gloss

3. Details, accessories, discs

  • Special Effects: Macota Flip Flop (changes colour according to viewing angle), Chrome spray, Fluorescent or neon colours
  • Protection: Always finish with a topcoat to prevent abrasion and fading

Colour variations and effects

COLORIT offers a range of effect and classic shades. You can easily create a combination to suit your taste. Favourites include:

  • Matte Black (RAL 9005) - sporty, understated
  • Metallic grey or graphite - ideal for frames and tanks
  • Neon colours (orange, green, yellow) - visibility and style in one
  • Flip Flop effects - changes colour according to the light (blue-purple, copper-green)
  • Silver or chrome - retro look on accessories and bikes

Practical example: renovation of an older scooter

  1. Clean plastic and metal parts. Use Brunox Epoxy on heavily damaged ones.
  2. Apply Plastic Primer to plastics. Apply 1K-Filler on metal.
  3. After drying and light sanding, apply 2-3 coats of paint (e.g. RAL 3020 red for plastic and black metallic spray for metal).
  4. Finish with two coats of topcoat.
  5. Allow to cure ideally 24-48 hours away from moisture.

Maintenance and durability

COLORIT spray paints are highly resistant to UV, salts, water and normal wear and tear. For longer life, it is recommended to wash by hand, not use aggressive cleaners and apply a protective detailer (e.g. wax or ceramic spray) once a season.

Refurbishing two-wheeled machines is not only useful but also fun. With the right choice of products and careful preparation, you can significantly extend the life of your bike, scooter or motorcycle while customising it to your exact taste. Whether you prefer a subtle matt black or a striking chrome effect, you'll find exactly what you need in the COLORIT range.
