How to make a retro look with Chalk Effect spray
Chalk Effect spray gives your furniture a matt retro look. We’ll show you how to use it properly and what you can transform with it.
The vintage and shabby chic style is still in the limelight after all these years. Its charm lies in its imperfection, patina and the impression that the object has a story behind it. Whether you're refurbishing your grandmother's old sideboard or want to inject personality into a plain wooden Ikea stool, Chalk Effect spray is a quick, effective and affordable way to create a matte retro look without the need for complicated techniques.
COLORIT offers a wide selection of Chalk Effect sprays from Cosmos Lac that allow for easy application, perfect coverage and create a velvety matte finish with a subtle chalky texture. The result is a surface that looks hand-painted, yet with the benefits of spray application - no brush marks, uniformity and speed.
Why choose Chalk Effect and where to use it
The Chalk Effect has a specific characteristic - the paint does not create a gloss or reflection, but a matt surface with a warm impression. It is ideal for:
- wooden furniture (chairs, chests of drawers, tables, shelves)
- decorations (frames, pots, boxes, candle holders)
- metal and ceramic accessories
- accessories for children's rooms or Provence-style interiors
One of the advantages is the ease of patination - once dry, the surface can be lightly sanded with fine sandpaper on the edges or selected areas to give the impression of wear and age. This effect is particularly popular with "shabby chic" style furniture.
What to watch out for when working with Chalk Effect sprays
Chalk Effect sprays create a characteristic matt, chalky finish that looks velvety and retro - but it is this texture that is more sensitive to scratches, abrasion and dirt. If you plan to use the coating on items that will be handled frequently (e.g. chairs, drawers, handles), it is essential to finish the finish with a protective clear coat. For example, a water-based acrylic varnish from the Cosmos Lac range is ideal, as it will maintain the look but increase durability.
It should also be remembered that Chalk sprays are not suitable for outdoor use without additional protection as they are not UV stable and may lose colour or matt effect due to moisture or sunlight. Similarly, they do not adhere well to plastic, slippery or unpainted metal surfaces without the use of a primer. And if you apply the spray too thickly, the surface may begin to map or "chalk".
How to do it properly
First, you need to prepare the surface. For wood, a light sanding is necessary (grit P180 to P240), for glossy surfaces or painted furniture, it is necessary to roughen the top layer to make the paint adhere better. The surface should be cleaned of dust, grease and old paint residues. Macota degreaser, for example, is good for this.
Shake the Chalk Effect spray for at least two minutes before use. Apply it from a distance of 25 to 30 cm in several thin coats. Take your time - allow at least 10-15 minutes between coats. Cosmos Lac sprays dry quickly but reach ideal cure after 24 hours.
Once dry, you can lightly sand the surface in some areas - such as corners, edges or handles - to create a "peeling" effect. For added durability, a final coat of a colourless matt varnish, such as the Cosmoc Lac range, is recommended.
Ideas on what to make with Chalk Effect spray
- Bedside table with patina: Spray it with a light pastel colour (e.g. old pink), let it dry and then sand lightly on the edges to let the original wood colour shine through.
- An old mirror frame: Spray two colours over each other (e.g. blue-grey over white) and then partially sand the top layer.
- Wooden chests: use a beige or cream tone, add vintage handles and the result looks like something out of a Provençal café.
- Flower pots and vases: the chalk effect is also beautiful on ceramics, which you can turn into an elegant interior element thanks to the finely textured matt.
What to expect from the result
Chalk Effect is not a hard varnish. The surface is soft to the touch, slightly absorbent and naturally matt. It is therefore advisable to protect it with a varnish, especially if the decoration will be touched or exposed to water frequently. Cosmos Lac also offers colour variations that can be combined or layered.
Before application, ideally test the spray on a test piece, such as the inside of a piece of furniture or a scrap of wood. The paint has a specific behaviour that depends on the absorbency of the substrate and the thickness of the layer.
Chalk Effect spray paint is the ideal tool for anyone who wants to create original decorations, renovate furniture or simply turn an ordinary piece into something special. With a minimum of tools and a little creativity, you can create an effect that looks like something out of a design magazine. COLORIT offers a range of shades and related products that make the journey from idea to finished piece short, fun and accessible to everyone.
